LASIK Surgery

What is Laser Vision Correction?

Lasik, epi-LASIK and PRK are the most common laser vision correction procedures performed today. LASIK is the most frequently practiced, although all three procedures are regularly performed at Refractive Surgery Center.

What is LASIK?

In the LASIK procedure, Dr. Dotson combines the use of a microkeratome and the 'cool' light of an Excimer laser. The microkeratome is a very precise instrument which creates and lifts an extremely thin flap of corneal tissue. With the flap lifted, he then uses the laser to reshape the underlying corneal tissue (the stroma) and correct the nearsightedness, farsightedness and/or astigmatism. The micro-thin flap is then placed back over the cornea to heal quickly and naturally, without the need of stitches.

Why choose LASIK?

More than a million people each year are choosing to live their lives free of their dependence on, and the inconvenience of, glasses or contact lenses. LASIK has become the procedure of choice because of the rapid recovery time and the lack of side effects and complications inherent with some of the other vision correction procedures. In fact, most LASIK patients experience a significant improvement in their vision within hours of having this revolutionary procedure. It is not at all unusual to hear the patient comment, "I don't know what all the fuss was about - I only wish I hadn't waited so long to have it done!"

Are you a good candidate?

Most people who are nearsighted, farsighted or have astigmatism can benefit from laser or surgical correction. Based on a thorough examination of your eyes, Dr. Dotson will make a specific recommendation about LASIK.  His decision will be based on many factors, including your age, vision stability, overall health, your current prescription and your expectations for the results.

How long does LASIK take?

The actual procedure, which is virtually painless, takes less than ten minutes, and is performed on an outpatient basis. You will need to be at the surgery center for about two hours on the day of your procedure, and you will also need to arrange for a friend or relative to drive you home following the procedure, as you may feel drowsy from the medication and your eyes will be sensitive to light for several hours following the procedure.

Most patients experience a dramatic improvement in their vision within hours after the procedure, and are able to resume normal activities or even return to work the next day, although it may take a week or two for vision to completely stabilize.
